CNJ power on the NY&LB
Title:  CNJ power on the NY&LB
Description:  The NY and Long Branch was jointly operated by PRR and CNJ prior to Conrail. CNJs trains originated from their Jersey City terminal until 1967, when the Aldene plan moved them into Newark Penn Station, with a cross platform transfer from New York connections. Here we see on of them, led by GP40P 4105. Note the crossing gates. They were manually operated at this time.

Title:  NJ Transit 5902

Ex CNJ cab car
Title:  Ex CNJ cab car
Description:  When the Aldene plan was established in 1967, trains were set up to run push-pull. To accomodate this, CNJ home built some cab cars from their 1925 coaches, closing in a vestibule and installing engineers controls. Here one of them enters Newark Penn Station after coming off the LV at Hunter Tower, just to the west of the station.

Two units to Phillipsburg
Title:  Two units to Phillipsburg
Description:  NJ Transit continued running two rush hour trains to Phillipsburg NJ, as well as a mid day run, until 1983. Here one of the rush hour trains is ready to go from Newark Penn Station behind a GP7P-note the squared off end on the long hood of the lead unit-and a GP40P. NJ Transit adopted the paint scheme used on the EL U34CHs until it came up with the "disco" scheme in the mid 80s. Many of the fans thought this was an elegant paint scheme, and that the new scheme was not an improvement.

Description:  By this time in 1983, NJ Transit had acquired some Amtrak E 60s to replace he GG 1s, which were slated for retirement. This one has just cut off its train from New York at South Amboy, and continues the time honored tradition of the engine change, pulling past the crossivers to head for the small yard. Note the crossing guard shanty and the old hand operated gates. These would soon pass into history.

Disco E 60
Title:  Disco E 60
Description:  I dont recall that any of the other E 60s got repainted in this scheme. This one was at Hoboken for the festival, and may have been painted primarily for the purpose of showing it off there. The E60s never had the success of the GG 1s, and were soon replaced by a variety of European design electrics in the late 80s and 90s. This unit had to be towed in, as it was powered by alternating current and could not run on the DLW 3000 volt DC network.
