Album Info:Covers the former Illinois Central trackage from Memphis, TN to Canton, MS. This line was once part of the IC's main line between Chicago and New Orleans, and hosted 8 passenger trains per day as late as the 1960's and hosted 2 to 4 piggyback trains per day until the 1990's. Amtrak's City of New Orleans used this line until 1995. Casey Jones had his famous wreck on this line on April 30, 1900. In the 1990's, then CEO Hunter Harrison decided to reroute all through traffic to the parallel Yazoo District due to this line's flatter profile. The Grenada District suffered from deferred maintenance throughout the Harrison years and was only used for local traffic/detour route until he sold this line in 2009 to V&S Railway, which is an affiliate company of A&K Railroad Materials. This new outfit formed a new company called the Grenada Railway to operate this line. During the Grenada Railway years, trains stopped running between Grenada and Canton and this segment was put up for abandonment in 2011. This abandonment was stopped due to a legal battle at the Surface Transportation Board led by the State of Mississippi and other concerned citizens, communities, and shippers. In 2013, the Grenada Railway attempted once again to abandon the Grenada to Canton segment but this abandonment was never allowed due to selling this line to the North Mississippi Regional Rail Authority in 2015. The rail authority then reached a lease purchase agreement with Iowa Pacific Holdings. Iowa Pacific operated this line until 2018, when International Rail Partners took over Iowa Pacific's lease purchase agreement with the rail authority. The entire line was reopened for revenue freight service in 2019.

The famous collision happened a few carlenghts past the bridge. If only that block signal right there would have been here then...

Title:  end of the old Water Valley main
Description:  This is the end of the old main line to Water Valley at the north end of North Yard. The track keeps going about 15 carlenghts past this switch but the track is out of service past the crossing (Moose Lodge Road) that you can barely see. They left enough room to come out with 2 engines over this switch. This was the original main line to Water Valley. This line got severed here in 1950 when Grenada Lake was being built. They built a new line to the north of the lake.

North Yard
Title:  North Yard
Description:  Shortly after I found out that CN was selling the Grenada District to A&K Railroad Materials, I decided to come take a few shots of North Yard as I though this might be one of the last times I could look at it before it was either overgrown with vegitation or pulled up. This yard was built in 1915 and most of the switching at Grenada was done here. You could kick cars easy here, there is a slight downhill grade from where you pull the pin down to the clearance points of the yard tracks, then it started slightly uphill. You had to be carefull when kicking cars here, if the cars didn't couple up to another car or if you didn't ride the car and tie a brake, they would roll back out on you. The 9 tracks in this picture from left to right are: Ice Industries spur, New Track, Main Line, Hulburt, West Side, Old Main, Pass, East Side, Outside. The Old Main was the longest track in the yard, it would hold 52 cars. The Grenada main would hold 39 cars between Siren Crossing and the North Yard Switch. I have spent many nights here switching cars making up the cuts for the Memphis and Jackson locals as well as cuts for local industries.

Description:  This Danger Fast Moving Trains sign is located at the Georgia Pacific Crossing just south of Grenada near Elliott, mile 625.7. The large Georgia Pacific mill in the background closed in 2010 but GP still owns and maintains the building for possible future reopening. This plant was once a big customer for the railroad, loading upwards of 10-15 cars per day back in the 1990's. GP had this sign placed here back in the late 80's/early 90's after several log trucks got hit here.
