This is what I get....
Title:  This is what I get....
Description:  For not getting out of the car. I pulled up on adjacent US 59 to get a shot, stopping in the traffic lane for this view of a southbound grain train, and the power for Mondays dodger. Took the shot through the windshield, which might explain the fuzziness!!

Crew change
Title:  Crew change
Description:  Like most of these events, it started with a horn I heard from the house. I cant beat a train here by going through town, so the process is to take Ark 59 south, then cut over to Westville OK on US 62, and start north, looking for the train. I can usually catch it a couple miles north of Westville. Today, no train. Heres why: they canned it at Watts. The train was 119 cars, long enough that it would block the crossing at the north end of the yard, so they cut the train to accommodate. The train waited only maybe 30 minutes, but too long to leave the crossing blocked. After this crew got on, they had to put the train back together-maybe a half dozen cars and a two unit DPU. It took time. Meanwhile, the 261 was working at the north end.

Title:  Interesting leader
Description:  The lead unit on the grain train had an emblem honoring the Strathconas Regiment. This is one of at least two so adorned; the other that I know of is CP 7030, which was here not long ago,

Title:  Roster view
Description:  The 261 pulled up to the private crossing just north of Watts for head room, allowing this roster shot of leader KCS 5002. For some reason, these units dont show here much, at least not when Im watching. So it was good to see one, especially in the lead.

Title:  Across the road
Description:  Im almost always chasing here, and typically take this shot from the southbound side of US 59. The train wasnt moving that fast, so I came around and shot him from the northbound side, a slightly different angle.

DPU
Title:  DPU
Description:  The DPU on the grain train finally rolls past. I knew the 261 was still working at Watts, and for a moment considered following this train to Westville, another four miles south, where the shot across the field was beautifully lit, with hay bales scattered around it, but also wanted to get a shot of the 261 on the Illinois River. This was as far as I went with the grain move.

Waiting...
Title:  Waiting...
Description:  I mentioned the dilemma of chasing the grain train to Westville for the hay field shot, and having decided against it, rather than miss the 261 heading north. I neednt have worried. Here he is, now shadowed in the trees at the north end of Watts siding, waiting for a southbound to pass on the main. Oh well...

The southbound
Title:  The southbound
Description:  Ten minutes later, I heard a horn to the north, followed shortly by the three headlights of a train swinging onto the Illinois River bridge, then into the patch of sun immediately to the south, about to roll past MP 234 and the southbound home signal at CP North Watts.

Title:  Finally here
Description:  The 262 rolls through the signals at the north end of Watts, about to meet the 261, which has spent a lot of time here in Watts. It will have to wait for a long 262, consisting of 102 freight, 37 auto racks, and one articulated auto rack.

On the bridge
Title:  On the bridge
Description:  Now having made its meet, the 261 rolls north as the light goes, seen here on the Illinois River bridge north of Watts. Hell be into the climb up to Siloam Springs shortly. The shadows will have taken over there by the time he crests the grade. I spent almost three hours with these three trains, and never got any farther away than MP 239, three miles south of the Watts yard. Some days are like that!!

A long way from home, then a short trip
Title:  A long way from home, then a short trip
Description:  Sometimes you think youre going to get a lot of railroad, but things dont quite work out that way. I was visiting family in Georgia, and had a couple of days while my wife and some of the gals went to Pigeon Forge, so I thought Id get up on the e Southern Rathole to check out the action. I got to Dayton Tenn, and saw that getting through town was going to be a challenge. And there was a southbound waiting to move after getting a signal. I chased to the next town, Bakewell, and to him passing the signal there. Id spend the day between here and Dayton. Saw 7 trains. The skies were gray all day, which sucked-I HATE when I go somewhere I never get to go, and the weather sucks, especially after the prediction was for 70 and sun. But, a bad day train watching.....

Back to Dayton
Title:  Back to Dayton
Description:  Dayton was a good place to sit: an easi;y checked signal, and good sight lines for a southbound, and bathrooms nearby, important for an old guy on diuretics. It proved to be a fruitful day. When I got back from the first chase, this southbound was sitting at the north end of town. The signal must have just cleared, as he started moving just as I took up my position.
