Viewing Album: Erie Station, Salamance New York
By:
Gary Everhart
Dates:
7/13/2012 - 7/15/2012
Album Info:
One of the destinations on our short trip to New York Finger Lakes area was to revisit the railroad sites in Salamanca, New York, after a brief visit there 6 years ago. The beautiful Erie station, built in 1904, has suffered even more during the last 6 years. Once an extremely busy hub on the Erie system with accompanying shops and yards, now all that is left is a decaying station, remains of a concrete coaling tower, a few girder bridges and the ROW now used by the Western New York and Pennsylvania. Officially on the Seneca Indian Nation reservation, the station is under their ownership as a No Trespassing sign reminds visitors. With no effort being made to save this historical building by the tribe, it will be gone in a few short years. A historical loss that can and should be prevented.

Erie Station, Salamanca, NY - 2012
Description:
The west end of the station shows broken windows which will accelerate the decay inside. Once a proud symbol of the Erie system, now it is a forgotten jewel that could bring visitors if restored.

Erie Station, Salamanca, NY - 2012
Description:
One hundred years later, the Erie station shows major signs of decay and neglect. Now under the Seneca Tribe ownership (on the reservation), there seems to be no evidence of preserving this historical treasure.

Now being used by the Western New York & Pennsylvania RR, the west right of way curves gradually out of sight. The shops, roundhous and yards would have been to the right of the tracks, now mostly overgrown.

"No Trespassing!- By Order of the Seneca Nation of Indians"
Description:
Only by getting near the freight door on the decaying Erie station at Salamanca, NY, can one read the no trespassing sign. Shame that the Seneca Nation couldn't restore this station as a historical treasure and tourist attraction. It could bring more business to their casinos!
