Conrail Business Car #10 |
Description: |
Reuben S. Brouse caught the Buffalo-bound Conrail inspection train just above Driftwood, PA, on this early March day in 1981. CR #10 has quite a history. Built by Pullman as a parlor-observation car drawing room in 1925, it was initially christened "Queen Elizabeth" and served on the NYC Empire State Express. NYC purchased the car from Pullman in 1935 and renamed it "Hudson River." In 1942 the car was renamed "Kalamazoo River" and served the Twilight. The large rear platform was constructed to accommodate President F. D Roosevelt's wheel chair. Then in 1947 it was renamed again to "Victoria Park" before being converted to NYC Track Inspection Car #30 in 1952. It was pulled into special service when JFK's body was transferred from NY City to Washington DC. It was the second to the last car in the funeral train - the last car, PRR 120, carried his body. From there it went to PC roster and renumbered PC #78 in February of 1976. Finally Conrail took possession on 4/1/1976. It was renumbered #10 and a rebuild inside after 1983. After CR, it rolled onto the CSX roster who extensively updated the car and renumbered in CSX 994010 with the name "New York". It remains on their roster but deserves preservation in a deserving museum like the Smithsonian. |

CR Business Car #10 |
Description: |
Rolling through the hills of Pennsylvania near Pitcairn is this Conrail business train. The end car is CR #10 which has a lengthy history. Going backward, this car was ex-PC 30, exx-NYC, exxx-Victoria Park, exxxx-Kalamazoo Park, exxxxx-PULL Hudson River, nee-Queen Elizabeth. This is a modified HW "daytime" business car rebuilt from a parlor observation. Conrail conductor Ken Taylor was at the right spot to capture this foggy photo. |

Picnic train help |
Description: |
The Southern Tier picnic train got a unit on the rear at Gang Mills to assist with the return trip on the Corning Secondary, since there was no place to turn the power at Hammond Lake. This GP 40 did the honors, sharing the job with a pair of E 8s on the head end. |

Say goodbye |
Description: |
A couple of riders on the rear platform watch the trains progress through East Glass. Hell be waving goodbye as the train gets up to speed for a quick ride east. Jack Kithcart was running, and he must have thought he had the Lake Cities. We never caught up to him. |
