In 1892 the Cape Government Railways placed six 7th Class steam locomotives with a 4-8-0 Mastodon wheel arrangement in service and between 1892 and 1893 another thirty-two were acquired. In 1912, when they were assimilated into the South African Railways, they were renumbered in the range from 950 to 987 and classified as Class 7.
