Several railfans had gathered at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal engine zone to help Bill Purdie, the Southern Railway’s MASTER MECHANIC-STEAM, prepare 2-8-0 722 for its ferry trip back to Birmingham over the next two days. The 722 had been in New Orleans for the very first DEEP SOUTH STEAM EXCURSIONS, which ran to Hattiesburg and back the previous weekend. |
