Description:  Born to the Grand Trunk Western in December of 1978, this GTW GP38-2 #5830 has continuously served the GTW. The last photo of it in RRPA was from 2021 - would expect it to still be running the rails today. No photographer was listed for the photo which is now in my rr collection.

View from Tuscola Interlocking Tower
Title:  View from Tuscola Interlocking Tower
Description:  This is a view south from the "TY" interlocking tower at Tuscola, IL. Tuscola Tower was also known as TY Tower by many. The tower was operated by Illinois Central Operators and was manned 24 hours until October 23 of 1992 when it was closed. The tower housed a 48 lever Style A interlocking machine and had a vertical locking bed which was located below the floor. TY Operators also gave train orders from the tower, there were order forks for each track. The C&EI train order signal was a GRS 2 light type D signal; the IC train order signal was a US&S type signal. These two set of train order signals were controlled by a box on the wall that had a simple light switch. For B&O train orders the operator would put the signal lever half way, this would not give a red nor a green signal but a lunar signal. This indicated to the crew that there were orders to be picked up. The tower was demolished on June 1st, 1994. The track to the left is the former C&EI linec while the right side is the former B&O line. Both crossed the IC line just before this point. No photographer was listed for the photo which is now in my rr collection.

WC SD40 #3073 - Wisconsin Central
Title:  WC SD40 #3073 - Wisconsin Central
Description:  This unit began its life as an EMD SD40, originally built for the Missouri Pacific (MP) as #773 in May 1971. It was eventually acquired by the Wisconsin Central (WC), where it was notably part of a group of "Grey Ghost" SD40-3 units. These units were relettered for the WC and were famously used to replace the railroad's iconic SD45 fleet during the CN takeover era. The locomotive was later acquired by the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway (W&LE). It currently operates as W&LE #3073, having been rebuilt to SD40-3 specifications. No photographer was lised for this roster shot which is now in my rr collection.

WC GP30 #814 - Wisconsin Central
Title:  WC GP30 #814 - Wisconsin Central
Description:  This is a great roster shot by rr photographer Paul Wester with his permisssion to post. The loco originated from the Chicago and North Western Railway (CNW), identified as CNW GP30 #814 built by EMD in April of 1963. Acquired by the Wisconsin Central, it operated as WC #814 but later renumbered to WC #2251 during the 1994-1995 period when the railroad consolidated its fleet numbering. The color slide is now part of my rr collection.

ATSF C30-7 #8134 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Title:  ATSF C30-7 #8134 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:  Built in June 1981, ATSF C30-7 #8134 was part of Santa Fe’s final order of C30-7s (units 8123–8152). It primarily hauled heavy freight, including coal and manifest trains across the Santa Fe system. In late 1989, Santa Fe traded 57 C30-7s, including 8134, back to General Electric as part of a deal for new Dash 8-40B locomotives. It then operated under the reporting mark GECX 8134. The unit was leased to Burlington Northern (BN) in December 1991. Following the 1996 BNSF merger, it was integrated into the BNSF Railway fleet and renumbered to BNSF 5177 in January 1998. It was officially retired by BNSF in May 2002 as the railroad phased out older GE "C-boats" in favor of more efficient modern power. No photographer was listed for the photo which is now in my rr collection.

ATSF C30-7 #8021 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Title:  ATSF C30-7 #8021 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:  ATSF 8021 was part of the extensive fleet of 157 GE C30-7 locomotives, built between 1976 and 1986, which were 3,000-horsepower, 6-axle units. Most C30-7s were phased out by the mid-2000s due to age, high failure rates, and the arrival of newer locomotives. #8021 was built by GE in March of 1978 and assigned to heavy freight service across the vast Santa Fe system. Once there were thousands
Title:  Once there were thousands
Description:  The Vermont Railway was never a powerhouse in the rail industry, a collection of lines in Vermont that were once part of the Rutland, which had quit in 1962. Back in the late 70s and early 80s, some smaller roads made a lot of money putting equipment in service on a per diem basis, one of which was the Vermont Railway, via its large fleet of piggyback trailers. Fifty years later, some are still around, such as this one used as a storage shed on a farm on Davidson Rd in Siloam Springs.

PRR 5813, BH-50, c. 1953
Title:  PRR 5813, BH-50, c. 1953
Description:  BYC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred R. Kern that was taken just East of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1953. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5813 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5813 was built in May of 1947 and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, they're serving as tail end pushers for a mixed-cargo freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Wave to the Fireman!

CN 8903
Title:  CN 8903
Description:  We heard on the scanner that the local L555 was up at Ashkum waiting on A408 to come north. And as soon as A408 hit Ashkum, the L555 was lined to come south for home at Gilman. Unfortunately, the detector there read the axle count at "12" meaning it was just a pair of light engines. Soon enough, L555 came racing south through town with a pair of SD70M-2s. This local, for quite some time, was dominated by IC SD70s, but recently, SD70M-2s have seemed to have found their way to this local. At least the leader was clean.

IC 1002
Title:  IC 1002
Description:  As suspected, I had missed a few trains on both the CN and even the UP/CSX Joint Line while here in Sheldon. But, the KBS and TPW shots were pretty worth it in my opinion. But, there was still plenty of daylight left to use. So, it was back to the main lines. According to my friends who were here in Sheldon, todays M335 had a IC Deathstar SD70 on the front, which was obviously a no brainer to catch. It sounded like they were still a pretty far ways away still so we werent in a very big rush. Red signals in both directions at Watseka meant a clear shot to the CN at Danforth. Unlike Watseka, we were greeted with a green signal for a northbound here. Local A408, the train that usually has the Deathstars on the front, apparently had a repaint leader today according to my friends. And, surprisingly enough, A408 ended up being the train that the green signal was for, with the repaint up front.

KBS 703
Title:  KBS 703
Description:  I wasnt even in Indiana for more than 15 minutes, and I was already back in Illinois. Thankfully, the friends who had alerted me about the KBS leaving Lafayette were actually in Sheldon waiting on the train as well, which made it super easy to track its movements. When I arrived back in Sheldon, they were just beginning to put their train back together and head for home. The engines had been swapped from a 2x0 to a 1x1 set-up, which meant after I grabbed the signal shot I could get another shot that I had always wanted to get; the train crossing the 4-Lane US 24. That was a pretty major score. Once the train was all built, the KBS continued toward home base in Iroquois, pounding the diamond with the TPW in Sheldon with a pretty hefty cut of grain cars in tow.

TPW 3443
Title:  TPW 3443
Description:  The HL1 crew was on the consist with the four engines, and apparently the other train was the HL2 crew, which had just finished building a Lafayette Turn Job and was ready to head east. As it turned out, the KBS had one more stop before heading home to Iroquois, which was working the Sheldon Grain Elevator. So, that gave me enough time to see the HL2 on the move somewhere. So, for the first time in two weeks, I was finally "Back Home Again in Indiana" But not for too long! I went the short drive over to Kentland where I grabbed the train gaining speed as they head east toward Hoosier Lift in Remmington. That EMD pair sounded phenomenal here by the way!

KBS 703
Title:  KBS 703
Description:  A whopping hour and a half after arriving in Sheldon, I could finally hear the horn of the Lafayette Turn approaching. A friend had convinced me to head out to the curve at State Line Road for a shot there. It did turn out to be a nice shot, but it would be nice if that big bush on the right wasnt there. Honestly, for the KBS, the hour and a half wait was worth it. I hadnt done much short line railfanning past the Iowa Interstate this trip. I was down for a little today, especially from an east/central Illinois staple.

TPW 5015
Title:  TPW 5015
Description:  Since I was on this side of Kankakee, and I knew today was a "north" day for the Kankakee Hop, I decided to head north to Manteno to see if I could catch it one more time. I wasnt in Manteno for more than 20 minutes before I was alerted that the KBS was on their way back from Lafayette. This far north, I was a solid hour from Sheldon, and I needed to fill up with gas. So, I decided to leave the CN behind and head for Sheldon. As it turned out, the KBS had about every single grain elevator to work on their way back, so I had more than enough time (but at the time, I was totally unaware of that). So, when I arrived in Sheldon, the KBS was quiet. But, the TPW was not. There were two crews working the yard at Effner. So, I decided to go check that out. TPW is in the middle of a yard expansion project at Effner, which is making their operations a little funkier than they already are. There was a four pack of EMDs heading light east out of the yard when I got there, and I wasnt sure where they were going or how far they were going, so I decided to see. As it turned out, there was an entire train parked on the main line right outside of the yard. Typical TPW. And even more typical for them to run a four unit consist with both outside units facing in on the other engines... sigh. But, it made for a good shot of the train with the Effner grain elevator and the Indiana State Markers. The closest I had been to Indiana in two weeks. But, still not crossing over just yet!

NS 7135
Title:  NS 7135
Description:  After M334 cleared, I sent up a quick prayer and made a mad-man dash back up to NS rails. I knew there was a good chance the train would already be out of the yard before I could make it, and I didnt want to go very far west to shoot the train. So I just crossed my fingers and made a bee-line for the big limestone quarry west of town. And somehow, someway, I managed to beat the train. Thankfully, they still had to do their air test and throw some switches before leaving. But, it didnt take long for the solo thoroughbred GP60 to come thundering along with its train for Hennepin in tow. Great to see these things still kicking in the original NS paint scheme!
